On our trip from Florence to Rome, we made a wonderful detour to a winery in Umbria known as Tenuta Le Velette near Orvieto. We were treated to a tour of the original wine cellar started by the Etruscans, a lesson on Umbrian wines and a wonderful wine tasting paired with finger food to better understand the relationship between wine and food. The winery owner and our guide, Cecilia Bottai, instructed us in how to select the appropriate wine – “Food, Mood and Temperature.” The winery has been in Cecilia’s family for over 150 years and is a beautiful setting with vineyards, flowers, and historic buildings. As you can see from our group picture, we were all very happy after our winery stop.
